Unmanned Platform
SCADA
Shell Offshore operates
a number of unmanned platforms which feed oil and natural gas through pipelines
to a larger manned production facility. Upsets on the production platform cause
the remote platforms ESDs to trip. This would require operators to travel
to each remote platform to reset the ESD valves. Shell needed a better means of
protecting their remote platforms as well as better indications of any problems
at the remote sites. ASI provided
the solution.

Application
Requirements
Monitor
all remote platform ESD conditions.
Perform
gas flow calculations.
PID
control of gas flow control valves.
Remote
operations of shut-in valves. |
The
SCADA system consists of solar powered Fisher ROC RTUs communicating
over radio modems to a PC-based MMI. US Datas FactoryLink running on
OS/2 allows the operators to control and monitor the unmanned platforms. |
| The
remotes are polled once an hour to record operational parameters and are
capable of report-by-exception for problems or immediate updates. |
Results Achieved
Faster
response to ESD conditions.
Fewer
shutdowns requiring travel to remote sites.
Better
tracking of production at each remote site.
Better
overall control of feed to production platform. |
